Man arrested after downtown car chase

A man was arrested and charged with first degree recklessly endangering safety Sunday morning after allegedly leading police officers on a car chase through Monona and into downtown Madison.

According to the incident report, 62-year-old Travis Bartel attempted to run a police officer over with his vehicle in Monona. Beginning at approximately 5:25 a.m., Monona police chased Bartel until he crossed the border into Madison, police said.

Monona police were forced to end their chase near Dayton Street and called on the Madison Police Department for assistance. According to the report, MPD officer Scott Favour saw Bartel's vehicle facing the wrong way on Broom Street and attempted to block the suspect's path near State Street and Gilman Street.

According to the report, the suspect then intentionally crashed his car into the back of Favour's squad car, causing ""extensive damage."" Both the officer and the suspect sustained minor injuries.
