Dayton property may become apartment

The rezoning request of a Dayton Street property was filed in a Madison Plan Commission meeting Monday.

Brandon Cook, owner of a single-family house on 430 W. Dayton St. filed a request to rezone the property into a five- bedroom apartment. He inherited the house three years ago and said it has now ""gotten to the end of its useful life.""

""It's difficult to rent [as it is now],"" said Cook.

The prospective tenants of the new apartment, UW-Madison sophomores Katlyn Froistad, Jacqueline Rudzinski and Kristen Bodurtha, were present at the meeting.

Froistad said she was interested in renting the proposed property because it would be nice to have everything new and working properly.

However, Judy Olson, a member of the committee, made a motion to place the zoning amendment on file.

""I believe it does violate our standards for [Planned Unit Development], "" Olson said.

Olson said the building's new design is attractive, but she worries whether it will be useful in the future. She said the proposed five bedroom apartment situated in three stories is not a good design.

Olson said she does not like turning down projects but that this proposal only works for a niche group of people.

""We don't have a basic plan for this area that is needed to guide us as we make these choices,"" said Olson.

Michael Heifetz, a member of the committee, said the project is ""strange and unique,"" but said he will vote against Olson's motion.

Heifetz said the apartment building will produce a more attractive environment on West Dayton Street. He also said the proposal meets the standards set by the Plan Commission.

The committee voted to place the proposal on file.
