Two Democratic state Senators introduced new legislation Monday aimed at reforming the Milwaukee Public Schools system.
Called the ""RACE for Success,"" the new legislation would create a partnership between the MPS school board and Milwaukee's Common Council, headed by the school board president and the mayor of Milwaukee.
According to a statement, the bill would give the mayor veto power over the MPS school board's selection of a superintendent. The board would retain control over the MPS budget, but the mayor would have some authority to control the property tax levy.
The legislation has support from the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, the Wisconsin Education Association Council and the Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association.
Earlier this month, Gov. Jim Doyle said he might call an extra legislative session before the end of the year to push legislation reforming MPS.
