A new grocery store is coming to University Sqaure at the corner of University and Lake St, with a planned opening date by the second week of January.
Ald. Bryan Eagon, District 8, said that developer Jeff Maurer was planning to start work on the store by Sept. 28. Eagon said the store would be an independent grocery and not part of a local or national chain.
He said the store would focus on items like fresh produce and take out items that are often bought by students.
The previously proposed Badger Hall of Fame Grill, which was not going to be in the same location as the grocery but in University Square, is unlikely to move forward, according to Eagon.
He said that the developer for that proposal, which was set to be a 900-person capacity bar and grill, was not going to resubmit the plan after it faced a skeptical city Alcohol License Review Committee recently.
