A Madison Metro bus accident Monday morning injured three passengers and left the fate of the bus driver's job undetermined.
According to a police report, the driver was heading outbound on Aberg Avenue and attempting to turn onto Packers Avenue around 11 a.m. when a clipboard fell from the dashboard. When the driver went to pick it up, he lost control of the vehicle.
The Route 21 bus jumped the median in the road and crossed westbound traffic lanes before hitting two walls and coming to a halt. Fewer than 10 people were on the bus at the time.
Metro Transit spokesperson Mick Rusch said three passengers were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The bus driver has been cited for inattentive driving, but the fate of his job remains in the hands of the safety supervisor.
""In these cases, the standard procedure is that the driver is taken immediately to get drug-tested,"" Rusch said. ""The safety supervisor will then go through many different reports to make a determination whether the accident was preventable or not.""
Metro must then follow procedures outlined in its contract with the driver to deal with either type of accident.
The results of the driver's drug test have not been released, and the accident is under investigation.
