Dane County and UW-Madison observed a Clean Air Action Day Wednesday, urging students and staff to help in protecting against air pollution.
Recently the university expanded its definition of Clean Air Action Days, which are meant to warn students of harmful conditions in the atmosphere, to include days where fine particle pollution occur. The notifications were previously only used when high levels of ozone were prevalent, according to a university release.
Students and staff can reduce air pollution by using public transportation on campus, with passes given to allow for free bus rides, according to the release, as well as using less fireplaces or wood-burning boilers.
Other activities that are better for air quality include using the campus flex parking program and the university's Community Car car-sharing program.
UW-Madison is a member of the Dane County Clean Air Coalition, which focuses on bringing together various agencies, businesses and groups to reduce local air pollution.
