Still hot from the success of their latest album, Viva La Vida, Coldplay has released an EP entitled Prospekt's March, a collection of studio sessions left over from the recording of Vida.
Because the EP is a sort of continuation of Coldplay's latest album, it features a lot of the same sounds found on the record. Life In Technicolor II"" in particular out on Prospekt's March, sounding just like Viva La Vida's version, entitled simply ""Life In Technicolor."" However, the newer version features Chris Martin's powerful vocals, whereas the original is strictly instrumental.
""Lost+"" also echoes Viva La Vida and its song ""Lost!"" What's great about the new version, however, is that it features rap artist Jay-Z, and though the two musical talents may seem like an unlikely duo, the collaboration works perfectly. Jay-Z manages to keep Coldplay's sounds while still adding his genius to the song. It is arguably a better version than the one featured on Viva La Vida, offering something not as commonly heard and putting an interesting twist on the group's alternative sound.
Other tracks on Prospekt's March with strong ties to Viva La Vida include ""Lovers in Japan (Osaka Sun Mix)"" and a music video of ""Viva La Vida (Anton Corbijn Version).""
""Postcards from Far Away"" is just as brilliant as those echoing La Vida, but does not sound as exact in their replication on the album. All it features is the brilliantly mellow piano work of Martin but is a meager 48 seconds long, teasing the listener with a taste of a more mellow Coldplay, then quickly snatching it away. Luckily, the teaser is followed up by ""Glass of Water,"" an exciting song that cries classic Coldplay lyrics: ""Son, don't ask / Neither how full nor empty is your g Lass / Cling to the mast / Spend your whole life living in the past / Going nowhere fast.""
Overall, Prospekt's March is a solid EP. Anyone who enjoyed Viva La Vida is sure to love it. With a few stand-out tracks, specifically ""Lost+"" and ""Postcards from Far Away,"" the EP is an extremely enjoyable listen and a fitting addition to the Coldplay library.
