The Wisconsin Advertising Project released a study Friday showing Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has outspent Republican presidential candidate John McCain 5-to-1 on television advertisements in Wisconsin.
During the week of Oct. 21 to Oct. 28, according to the study, Obama spent $1,084,000 compared to McCain's $202,000 just in Wisconsin.
Ken Goldstein, UW-Madison political science professor and director of the Wisconsin Advertising Project, said Obama purchasing more airtime gives political scientists the opportunity to measure the effects of advertising in elections.
The advertising advantage held by the Obama campaign this year puts us in unchartered waters. This year the spending is hugely unequal and in some cases, the Obama campaign has massive advantages,"" Goldstein said in a statement.
The study shows both presidential candidates have spent the most in red states, and spending on television advertisements by presidential candidates totaled nearly $38 million during the week of the survey - a new record.
