UW Marching Band parents reportedly sent letters to university officials including Chancellor Biddy Martin expressing discontent about their children's experience with sexual hazing in the band, which triggered the investigation into the hazing allegations, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
A memo written by Associate Dean of Students Kevin Helmkamp, reported hazing incidents including forcing members to sing inappropriate words while running onto the field and depriving sleep by putting butts in members faces.
One of the parents who complained about their child's experience said they had to drink a combination of mustard, ketchup and liquor. They also cited instances where their son had to sit in a bus bathroom stall for more than one hour and was told to quit the band if they did not show up to Camp Randall at 4:15 a.m.
The hazing allegations led to the suspension of the band Oct. 3 and initiated the appointment of Donna Freitag, who is currently working with the band to create positive change.
