UW-Madison's European Union Center of Excellence received a $450,000 grant from the European Commission in Brussels Tuesday.
The EUCE received a grant from the European Commission to establish the center in 1998 and was awarded a grant for excellence in 2005. This year's grant will renew the center's funding through 2011.
Since its opening in 1998, the EUCE has emerged as one of the top European studies centers, according to Jonathan Zeitlin, a UW-Madison professor and co-founder of the center.
Zeitlin said the center promotes the exchange of transatlantic ideas.
In some areas, such as the study of new forms of EU governance, we have become key players in European academic and policy debate,"" he said in a statement.
The center promotes interdisciplinary work by involving UW-Madison faculty in law, journalism and mass communication, engineering, sociology and medicine.
The center's three themes for 2008-'11 are ""The EU as a Global Actor,"" ""Transformations of European Law and Governance"" and ""Exporting EU Governance.""
