Transportation Options provides alternatives

Did you know that UW-Madison boasts one of the most comprehensive commuter option programs in the country?

During Transportation Options week, April 28 - oMay 2 matchmakers will be stationed on campus to hook you up with a bus, vanpool, carpool, bike or walking opportunity that is tailor-made for you and your budget. You can enjoy a bagel and coffee while TO experts use a computerized mapping service to find a way for you to participate in our environmentally friendly community.

In addition to going green, you'll save money. One of the best values is an unlimited pass on Madison Metro's regional bus system, fully subsidized by

Transportation Services for employees and ASM for students. Don't know which bus to take? Our TO staff will find a route and schedule that works for you.

TO matchmakers are also experts at biking and walking. We'll find you a safe and attractive route from your door to your office or classroom. Do you have an old bike that needs a tune up? We'll do it for free. Mechanics from local bike shops have generously offered to be on campus for three days: Tuesday (Welcome Center, 21 N. Park St.), Wednesday (Union South) and Thursday (Animal Health Sciences on Linden Drive).

If it's too far to walk or bike and there's no bus route nearby, TO experts will go online to pinpoint the vans and carpools that run from your neighborhood to campus daily. You can save money because van and carpooling are much cheaper options than paying for your own gas and maintenance expenses for a long daily commute.

Another great option is SAFEwalk. Transportation Services offers pedestrians a safe way home or to the library or some other destination at night. Trained student escorts constantly communicate with a SAFE dispatcher or the police if needed. Call 252-5000 for a SAFEwalk.

Transportation Services also provides a safety net for those times when something unexpected happens and you need to leave campus. Emergency Ride Home is a free cab ride if you get sick or need to get home for some other urgent reason. All you do is present the cab driver the form found at our website.

When it's not an emergency but you still need to drive, we offer Flex parking.

Apply online and then use your cell phone to call in your parking location and charge your credit card for the time you need.

Finally, we've teamed up with Community Car. Seven cars are now stationed at different locations on campus to make it easy for you to get to a meeting, visit the doctor or run to the grocery store.

No other campus makes it so easy for you to choose an alternative to driving alone. Visit our website at www.wisc.edu/trans for a complete TO week schedule with locations for our matchmaking services starting Monday, April 28. If you can't participate during TO week, please call 263-2076 to find out how we can help you join our Transportation Options community.
