Chancellor John Wiley's career at UW-Madison:
1964-'68: Wiley completes his master's and doctorate degrees as a UW-Madison student.
1975: Wiley joins UW-Madison as a Electrical and Computer Engineering department faculty member.
1982-'86: Wiley chairs UW-Madison Materials Science program.
1986-'89: Wiley works as the College of Engineering's associate dean of research.
1994-2000: Wiley serves as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs
2001-present: Wiley serves as chancellor.
Major events during Wiley's time as chancellor:
- State funding has decreased steadily during Wiley's tenure, until the recently approved biennial budget provided the university enough money to cover costs to continue.
- At his press conference, Wiley said he has brought in $1 million in private donations a day for the last six years, a total of nearly $2 billion.
- Wiley has guided the university through its largest building boom since the 1960s,"" according to a University Communications statement.
- Wiley oversaw the adoption of the Campus Master Plan, which will guide campus redevelopment over the next two decades.
- Wiley directed the university during both the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the Virginia Tech shootings in April.
- Over the past few years, Wiley has taken heat from the Student Labor Action Coalition for allowing the alleged violation of labor licensing laws. In April 2007, Wiley sent a university official to El Salvador to monitor a scrutinized Adidas factory that had provided UW athletic apparel.
- According to the Wisconsin State Journal, some people blame Wiley for the university's shaky relationship with the state government.
