A bill intended to fight global warming advanced in the Democrat-controlled state Senate Wednesday, though its fate in the Republican-controlled state Assembly is cloudy.
The Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee passed the Wisconsin Safe Climate Act, a bill meant to decrease the amount of greenhouse gases produced in the state.
The bill would attempt to cut greenhouse gases to 1990 levels by 2020, with protocols to achieve the goal required by 2011.
State Sen. Mark Miller, D-Monona, who co-authored the bill, said it was unlikely the bill would pass the state Assembly.
The bill is opposed by Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, and whatever they say, usually Republicans dance to that tune,"" Miller said, referencing the state's largest business lobbyist group.
The actions proposed by the bill would be overseen by the state Department of Natural Resources.
