Local weather forecasts have called for a chance of four inches of snow to fall Saturday - the first day of December - with the possibility of three-to-eight inches of white powder if a low-pressure system pushes its way through the area.
The current forecast notes that if the storm skirts around Madison, rain and potentially freezing rain could put a damper on people's planning to travel out of the state this weekend.
According to WISC-TV meteorologist Karin Swanson, the storm should start as snow in the morning and change to sleet in the afternoon, with the potential to switch to rain by nightfall.
The accumulation of snow, ice and rain could make for pretty messy conditions Saturday,"" Swanson said.
While weather conditions should make for a messy weekend, the state's snowfall record for Dec. 1 is 12.1 inches set 22 years ago.
