Gov. Jim Doyle reaffirmed his commitment to BadgerCare Plus, a far-reaching health care program for children and low-income families, in a speech at a Madison YMCA Wednesday.
We have a moral obligation to provide every child in Wisconsin with good, comprehensive health care,"" Doyle said in a statement. ""Health care in Wisconsin should be a birthright, not a ticket to bankruptcy. BadgerCare Plus is simple and will provide health care coverage to more families who need it.""
Doyle said BadgerCare Plus would reorganize Medicaid, BadgerCare and Healthy Start into a larger streamlined program. He also said lower class families would be able to buy into the program for free and middle income families could buy into the program for around $10 a month.
A report by the Department of Health and Family Services stated there are 98,000 children without health insurance in Wisconsin, according to Doyle.
Throughout the recently completed budget negotiations, Doyle pushed for expansion of BadgerCare, which received more support than other health care provisions.
