County Supervisor Ashok Kumar, who currently holds the District 5 seat on the Dane County Board, announced Wednesday he will not be seeking a second term in 2008.
I am forever grateful for the experience of representing the vibrant and diverse constituents of the fifth district,"" Kumar said in a statement.
Kumar garnered remarkable partisan and grassroots support en route to his election in the spring of 2006. His policymaking efforts focused on improving the rights of the working class, immigrant workers, people of color and several other oppressed groups throughout Dane County.
""Supervisor Kumar's departure will leave a gaping hole in Dane County's commitment to its marginalized communities,"" said former Madison Common Counsel President Austin King in a statement.
Kumar is currently a senior at UW-Madison majoring in religious studies and languages and cultures of asia. He plans to graduate in spring 2008 and continue his activism at the Liberty Tree Foundation for the Democratic Revolution as a Program Director and Fellow.
