While most tenants of the 505 N. Carroll St. apartment building have returned to their apartments, others will be displaced for an estimated two weeks due to extensive damage caused by Saturday's fire.
Fifth-floor resident and UW-Madison junior Elise Kostrivas said she was told she and one of her roommates would not be allowed back in for two weeks while cleaning crews of CHT Apartments, the building's owner, repair parts of her room.
Kostrivas said the Red Cross supplied her and her roommates four nights at the Doubletree Hotel, 525 W. Johnson St., but that they had to check out after their third night Thursday because the hotel was booked. She said they would check back in Friday.
We have one more night covered by the Red Cross, and luckily we can stay through Thanksgiving if we want with the same discounted rate they're giving us, so that's really nice,"" she said.
Kostrivas said the cleaning crew has called with repair updates and CHT has called with a general time frame for her return.
Joe Korv, a CHT manager, said the repairs on Kostrivas' floor deal mostly with water damage and that cleaning crews are going through a drying process to decrease the risk of mold. He said it is too early to know the cost of the damage but that the fire department's quick response kept it to a minimum.
""I think everyone did a wonderful job in a horrible situation,"" he said.
Kostrivas said she would like to hear more from the fire department regarding the cause of Saturday's fire.
Bernadette Galvez, a Madison Fire Department public information officer, said the fire's cause is still under investigation.
