The troubled 19-year-old, whom police suspect was the man behind Tuesday's campus lockdown, was caught early Friday morning in San Diego, according to the University of Wisconsin Police Department.
Jesse Miller was found by San Diego authorities at a military hospital in the area. Authorities said Miller did not have a weapon on him and was taken into custody without incident. Miller is scheduled to appear in a San Diego court today and awaits an extradition trial to bring him back to Wisconsin.
UW police said they still do not know if Miller was ever in Madison Tuesday when he made a call to the Dane County Crisis Center saying he was on a UW Hospital parking structure, possessed a weapon and wanted the police to kill him.
Police believe Miller made two subsequent calls after that one to the police. In those, Miller claimed shots were fired near the hospital and that he heard about a bomb threat at the hospital.
Before San Diego police said they caught Miller, Madison police reportedly had information that pointed Miller's whereabouts to an apartment building at 2005 E. Washington Ave.
UW police said they do not know how Miller got to San Diego or why he was there.
We don't know if he has any ties or family in that area,"" said Univeristy of Wisconsin Police Department Sgt. Jason Whitney. He added that the investigation continues and now that authorities apprehended Miller, more questions can be answered.
Miller had been missing from Dane County Jail since Sept. 8. He was in jail for strong-armed robbery and granted Huber, or work release, by a judge. Dane County authorities said Miller never gave them problems as an inmate and simply never returned to jail that day after leaving for a medical appointment.
Now that he has been found, Miller could face several more years of jail in Wisconsin.
