Men's soccer blanked by Northwestern

For the second consecutive match, the Wisconsin men's soccer team found itself staring at a 2-0 deficit going into half-time against No. 7 Northwestern Saturday.'

Despite another spirited second-half rally, the Badgers could not find the back of the net and eventually fell 3-0 to Northwestern at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill.'""

Facing the unenviable task of coming back from behind, the Badgers (0-2-1 Big Ten, 5-4-2 overall) upped their offensive tempo in the second half.'""

The Badgers had nine shots in the half but could not find a way past Wildcats goalkeeper Misha Rosenthal, who tallied four saves.'""

""The effort and intensity and emotion were all there in the second half, but unfortunately it took us too long to find them,"" head coach Jeff Rohrman said after the game.'""

Northwestern took only four minutes to get on the scoreboard. Wildcats forward Matt Eliason sent in a low cross from the right that fell perfectly for Mark Blades to volley past Badger goalkeeper Alex Horwath from 10 yards.

The Wildcats doubled their lead in the 25th minute when Geoff Fallon's left-footed shot from outside the box took a slight deflection and spun past Horwath.'""

More misery lay in store for the Badgers, as the Wildcats won a free kick on the edge of the box in the 55th minute. From the ensuing set piece, midfielder David Roth curled a sublime left-footed shot over the wall into the top corner to make it 3-0.'""

Sophomore left-back Scott Lorenz tried to reduce the deficit for the Badgers with a rasping drive from a distance that brought the best out of Rosenthal.'""

The Wildcats goalkeeper produced another good block to deny a low shot from senior midfielder B.J. Goodman.'""

Despite totaling 11 shots, the Badgers only had four attempts on target against Northwestern and were held scoreless for the second straight game.'""

Rohrman will hope to resolve the Badgers' inability to create clear-cut opportunities on offense as they prepare for their next game on Oct. 10 against rival UW-Milwaukee.'""
