In response to the shooting in Crandon, Wis., a bipartisan group of state legislators is proposing a bill that would require psychological evaluations for all law enforcement officials.
The shooter, Tyler Peterson, was an off-duty officer for both the Crandon Police Department and Forest County Sheriff's Department. Both agencies do not require psychological testing for officers, according to bill cosponsor state Sen. Dave Hansen, D-Green Bay.
Hansen said many law enforcement agencies already require psychological testing. The testing is necessary because of the demanding nature of law enforcement and the incredible"" stress it produces, according to Hansen.
""Besides [ the armed forces] defending our country, [law enforcement] is one of the most important duties [Americans] entrust in people,"" Hansen said.
The other lawmakers who are working on the bill are familiar with law enforcement. State Rep. Ann Hraychuck , D-Balsam Lake, is a former sheriff, and state Rep. Garey Bies, R-Sister Bay, is a former sheriff's deputy, according to Hansen.
