By the end of 2010, Madison Metro plans to install security cameras on all of their buses. Currently, 20 of the city's 204 buses have security cameras installed.
Despite privacy concerns voiced by students (probably for the confidentiality of their drunken bus ride exploits), the security cameras will increase bus safety as well as provide proof of any reported criminal activity.
Once installed, the cameras will record any crimes, whether violence or theft-related, aiding authorities in solving cases and bringing evidence to trials. And if there is nothing to review on the tapes, authorities will tape over the footage. Not only does this conserve videotapes, but it also soothes any worries students have of drunken shenanigans caught on camera.
Bus cameras are just one step on a brick road of safety paved by Madison's crime-conscious lawmakers. The cameras join the ranks of security cameras on State Street and University Avenue and 30 more police officers (budget permitting). Students can take solace in the city's multiple initiatives to ensure nighttime safety.
Rather than infringing on rider privacy, the cameras will increase safety by aiding investigations of criminal activity on the buses of Madison's leading public transportation provider.
