Dean of Students Lori Berquam again sent important campus safety information to members of the UW-Madison community Monday to highlight services available on campus.
Crime and safety continue to be serious concerns for our campus and city,"" Berquam said via e-mail. ""Please continue to look out for your friends and co-workers, especially when out late at night.""
Berquam added a link for to the 2007-'08 Campus Safety Guide to make students aware of campus crime statistics and safety resources.
According to the report, it is a ""reflection of the collaborative work of a variety of campus and community offices,"" including the Offices of the Deans of Students and the University of Wisconsin Police Department, among others.
UWPD issued its own safety message Monday as a reminder to students, faculty and staff not to take rides from strangers.
Police referenced a Sept. 3 situation in which a UWPD officer contacted a 29-year-old male on the 1200 block of Observatory Drive, who said he was offering rides to students since the buses had stopped running.
According to a statement, ""Vehicles associated with this individual are a white 1994 Mazda Navajo and a black 1988 Ford F-150 pickup truck.""
UWPD Lt. Eric Holen said police released the information strictly as a precaution, but advised students to control their environment when going out late at night and to avoid places of isolation.
""It's just a good idea to pay attention and to have a plan and utilize the resources that are available,"" Holen said.
Students are encouraged to utilize safety-related transportation services such as SAFEwalk and SAFEride.
