The late Kelly Nolan's sisters, MPD ask for help in search for her killer

Kelly Nolan's killer, or killers, remain at large, and Monday, her sisters and the Madison Police Department spoke publicly to reach out to the community for help in solving several unanswered questions.

The 22-year-old UW-Whitewater student was last seen alive on State Street at bar time the morning of Saturday, June 23. Almost two weeks later, police found Nolan's body in a ditch by Schneider Road near the towns of Dunn and Oregon.

There's not a day that goes by that we don't think about our sister Kelly,"" said Candace Nolan, Kelly's oldest sister.

""We ask that you please find it in your hearts, if anybody knows anything that may help us answer some questions as to what happened to our sister,"" she said, adding that a cash reward of $12,000 will be given to anyone who can bring her sister's killer to justice.

MPD Public Information Officer Joel DeSpain said detectives currently working on the case have no suspects because of several factors. A key, DeSpain said, is talking to as many people as possible. With students back on campus, he said it could lead to more witnesses who may have seen Nolan downtown before she was abducted.

""We believe there could have been people who were in Madison '¦ perhaps people who go to the university '¦ on the 22nd and 23rd of June who may have seen Kelly Nolan downtown,"" DeSpain said, ""may have even talked with her, walked with her who then left town the following Monday.""

During the summer, police created a sketch of a suspect. They were able to contact the suspect and decided the person participated in no wrongdoing.

DeSpain said hundreds of people - friends, bar owners and employees and people on the street at that time - have been contacted, but given the nature of the case, leads have been hard to come by.

""The weather at that time in the summer was hot, so there was some decomposition that took place '¦ it's not an easy investigation,"" DeSpain said, ""but we do believe that we will solve this case '¦ that there will be justice brought to the Nolan family and to this community.""

Detectives also said, according to DeSpain, they believe the suspect remains in southern Wisconsin. And while police call this case ""unusual,"" DeSpain said there is no reason to let the guard down.

""We're hoping we don't have someone who is a serial abductor or anything like that, but of course we don't know and that's why we do want to keep the word out there.""

He said the MPD wants to ""keep students thinking about their own behaviors on campus and not just students but other young people downtown.""

Although police continue to sift through several leads and conduct numerous interviews, Kelly Nolan's sisters said they would not lose hope.

""We have full faith the Madison Police Department will bring justice where justice is needed,"" Candace Nolan said. ""We just ask that the public please come forward.""
