Awais Khaled, vice president of College Democrats of America, introduced state Rep. Marc Pocan, D-Madison, as a fighter for students"" Monday night at the UW-Madison College Democrats kick-off meeting, and what Pocan is fighting for involves many students' higher education.
The Joint Finance Committee in Wisconsin, which consists of eight Democrats and eight Republicans, is currently dealing with the $58 billion state budget, and remains the only state in the country not to successfully pass one.
""The Governor made a real commitment to the state of Wisconsin and the UW System and added $225 million to the UW system for a number of things,"" Pocan said.
He said these things include ""an additional $44 million in financial aid, all the way up to money to have retention of faculty, for new buildings, and to keep [it so] that this university will be a world-class university system.""
Pocan also addressed concerns of many students receiving or awaiting financial aid.
After asking how many people in the room get financial aid from the UW System, Pocan added that many students' financial aid issues ""could be at risk.""
""We know at least 4,500 students, and it could be on upwards to 6,500 in the entire UW System, who are waiting to see if they are going to get financial aid or not, because it's a difference [of] whether the Democratic budget goes through or the Republican budget.""
