Madison residents are kicking their old garbage cans to the curb this week.
Starting Sept. 10, all Madison residents will be able to use the new tan refuse bins. Most of the carts have already been distributed to home and property owners throughout the city, but downtown remains one of the last areas to receive the new carts, according to Mayor Dave Cieslewicz's spokesperson George Twigg.
As for the old trash cans, the city has set up numerous drop-off locations throughout Madison. Still, Twigg said students should not worry about dropping off cans, or receiving the new one, because property owners should be taking care of it.
Cieslewicz said the new trash cans will, in time, save money and hold several more gallons than traditional cans.
Madison's new automated refuse collection program will be a major step forward for our city,"" Cieslewicz said in a statement. ""The new program will reduce our labor costs by over $150,000 in 2008.""
Still, the new refuse cans only hold about six 30-gallon bags of trash, and the city will not pick up extra bags of garbage. The new cans must also be positioned correctly, next to the green recycling bins with the white serial number facing the street; otherwise the trash will not be collected.
