Almost all Wisconsin homeowners lack proper flood insurance, according to a release from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The release comes only a few weeks after flooding caused millions of dollars in damages to southwest Wisconsin.
Close to 99 percent of Wisconsinites have only some type of homeowners insurance or less, the release stated. Homeowners insurance does not typically cover damages by floods.
Over $21.8 million was paid out in flood insurance for damages between 1997 and 2006 according to the release.
The storms and floods in late August prompted federal disaster declarations across 14 counties in the state, including the districts that encompass Madison. Over $5 million in damages were totaled Dane County alone.
