At a special meeting Aug. 7, the UW System Board of Regents ruled that student segregated fees cannot be used to pay for rent of off-campus facilities used by student organizations at UW-Madison.
Associated Students of Madison tried to appeal a ruling made by Chancellor John Wiley regarding the fees. The Regents upheld Wiley,¢s decision.
ASM"",¢s proposed budget included off-campus rent for the UW Roman Catholic Foundation, the Jewish Cultural Collective, Sex Out Loud, Promoting Awareness and Victim Empowerment, the Wisconsin Student Public Interest Research Group and Collegians for a Constructive Tomorrow. This semester, these groups will have to relocate to campus or fund their own rent.
In response to the issue, the Regents decided to form a committee to review overall system policy on the use of seg. fees.
Student seg. fees are charges in addition to instructional fees paid by all students for services, programs and facilities that support the primary mission of the university.
