UW-Madison students and Mifflin Street residents are primarily worried about alcohol and noise violations Saturday at the 38th annual Mifflin Street Block Party.
Still, the Madison Police Department has a number of other citations they can give to partygoers.
For instance, no cars can be on the street and residents looking for parking spaces should take their cars to a city ramp instead. The city ramp costs drivers $2 per day on weekends. Also, this year, as in years past, the glass ban ordinance is in effect, meaning glass is prohibited on Mifflin. Police said they will arrest anyone, regardless of age, if spotted with glass on the street during the party.
Students do have one thing going for them, however. Students and residents can buy as many kegs as they want. However, MPD Sgt. Dave McCaw warned potential keg buyers. He said if a keg is bought, no money can be accepted as payment toward the keg—that includes donations.
McCaw said those who receive money for kegs are no different from a bar. MPD Capt. Mary Schauf, central district commander, said students arrested for any type of violation Saturday will not only have to deal with the police, but also with the UW-Madison dean of students.
Schauf said staff members from the office of the dean will be on hand to immediately deal with rule breakers. Still, she said those arrested—and not taken to detox—will most likely be released within an hour or two, and will be allowed to rejoin the block festivities.
