UW student suspected burglar of several houses on Langdon

A UW-Madison student was arrested by Madison police early Sunday morning and is suspected to have burglarized multiple houses on the 100 block of Langdon Street.

According to the Madison Police Department, Nathan Castner, a 20-year-old UW-Madison student, allegedly stole ""small portable items,"" including small electronics, from several houses in a confined area on Langdon Street.

MPD Sgt. Jen Krueger Favour said a call about a ""burglary in progress"" was received at approximately 2:30 a.m. Soon thereafter, police located Castner on West Gilman Street and found a number of stolen items on him that matched several of the victim's description.

Krueger Favour said the case is ongoing because the 100 block of Langdon Street may not have been the only area affected. As for Castner, she said he faces possible felony charges for his suspected role in the burglaries. She also said the Office of the Dean of Students office at UW-Madison will be notified.

""The Dean of Students office has a lot more power than we do,"" Krueger Favour said.

UW-Madison sophomore Liz Meacham lives on the block of Langdon that was burglarized. She said her house, at 120 Langdon Street, was not victimized, but noted that the area is vulnerable for crime.

""It's really creepy, especially from Langdon and back toward the lake, there's just a bunch of alleyways,"" Meacham said, adding that police have lagged in their efforts to address crime. ""I think the students have taken a step forward, but I think that the police department needs to up the surveillance on Langdon Street.""

This weekend's burglary is one of the first reported crimes on Langdon this semester. Currently the area has a neighborhood watch program and officers on patrol. Still, police feel the area is just as vulnerable as any other street.

""Burglaries happen all over the city of Madison,"" Krueger Favour said. ""I would be hesitant to say that [Langdon Street] would be a targeted area, per se.""
