Four UW-Madison faculty members were honored during Monday's Faculty Senate meeting when they received 2006-2007 Hilldale Awards for distinguished research, teaching and service.
Klaus Berghahn, a UW-Madison German professor, was recognized in the Arts and Humanities Division. Berghahn has studied German philosophy as well as the history of anti-Semitism, and became the first director of UW-Madison's Center for German and European Studies. In his 40 years in the U.S., Berghahn said he ""ended up in one of the oldest and best German departments.""
Paul Sondel, professor in the departments of human oncology and genetics, was awarded in the Biological Sciences Division. His recent research has focused on the interaction between cancerous tumor cells and the immune system.
""The sense of continued joy and learning is what brings me to work everyday,"" Sondel said. ""If only research could move faster.""
Perry Frey, a biochemistry professor, won the award in the Physical Sciences Division. Frey was elected to the National Academy of Sciences for his research on enzymatic reaction mechanisms. He said he was grateful to both his courteous students and his colleagues who ""share the thrill of discovery"" with him.
Robert Enright, an educational psychology professor, won in the Social Studies Division for his research on the psychology of forgiveness. Sharon Derry, Enright's colleague, said his area of interest did not exist until he started it in 1985. Enright has written books and facilitated workshops to help educate children about his field.
