Spring break dominated by Sox, Rutgers

For those of you keeping score at home—Daytona Beach 1, Comiskey Park 0.

As I mentioned in my last column before break, I was seriously debating whether or not it would be better to spend the week in Daytona Beach, Fla. or at Comiskey Park for six White Sox games. In reality, I was going to Florida the whole time, but I was wondering if I would regret missing the opening week of the season.

Now that it's over, I can give you this advice: ALWAYS pick warm weather over anything. There is nothing I love more than being at a baseball game, but a full week in 80 degree weather trumps six games in 30 degree weather.

I managed to go to Saturday and Sunday's games against the Twins and I sat there and felt my tan skin literally freeze while Javier Vazquez actually got out of the sixth inning for the first time since 1973.

Let it go Rutgers

I debated writing a whole column on what radio host Don Imus said about the Rutgers women's basketball team last week, but writing an entire column about something that I think is being blown out of proportion is hypocritical.

First off, let me say that Imus' ""nappy-headed ho"" comment was senseless, stupid and unacceptable. His two-week suspension is justified and hopefully he will be less of a moron when he comes back.

However, I have to ask the question: ""Why does Rutgers care so much?""

Obviously it was a hurtful comment and one worth a second look by the university, but I've heard worse things said and just because this specific comment was made on the air doesn't mean its worse than the 100 racist things I hear every weekend when I go out.

I'm not saying that people don't have the right to be offended by what Imus said. I just think that Rutgers is making this a bigger deal for their players than it has to be. Why do they care what a shock jock known for running his mouth (and one who I'm assuming knows nothing about women's basketball) says about them?

Personally, I've never cared about what someone who I don't know says about me. If their head coach, chancellor, athletic director, etc. said this then I would understand why they would have a press conference to respond, but this is just some idiot on the radio. Let it go and enjoy the off-season because the national media is going to run with this story anyway.

Eagles heartbroken

On a lighter note, I hope that local Crease Creatures didn't miss the exciting men's hockey championship game Saturday night.

For the second year in a row, Boston College lost a 1-0 lead in the title game and lost. Last year former UW forward Robbie Earl gave the Badgers a National Championship with a game-winner with just under 10 minutes to go. This time the Eagles were even more heartbroken as Justin Abdelkader scored with just 18 seconds remaining to give Michigan State the title.

I've said it before and will say it again: The men's hockey NCAA Frozen Four is just as good as the men's basketball Final Four and sometimes even better.
