Man pays for Wii, instead receives phonebook

A Fitchburg man told police in early April he was conned into thinking he was buying a Nintendo Wii by two men but was instead sold a phonebook.

According to a Madison police report, the victim is a 25-year-old male from Fitchburg. The victim told police he agreed to buy a Wii from the suspects—two black males, one in his early 40s and the other in his early 20s—off ""Craig's List"" on the Internet.

Police said that after a place to meet was confirmed, the victim got money from an ATM and went to the exchange point on East Mifflin Street. There, he received what he thought was a Wii, the report said. However, the victim opened the package at his home and found a telephone book.

The report said the phonebook ""did not plug into a Nintendo."" The investigation remains ongoing.
