Door-to-door sales bill passes through Senate

Wisconsin is one step closer to having the toughest regulations in the nation on working conditions for young adults and college students whose summer jobs include door-to-door sales. The state Senate passed a bill with such regulations in a 28-5 vote Tuesday.

States Sen. Jon Erpenbach, D-Middleton, has pushed for legislation to regulate sales crews after his town witnessed a 1999 traffic accident that killed seven members of a traveling sales crew.

The bill requires companies to disclose to its employees the exact locations of its employment and how much they will be compensated. Additionally, the bill adds stipulations on wages and hours. The bill stipulates that students be hired, instead of being considered independent contractors.

Last year, the bill was tied up in the state Assembly due to concerns from Southwestern Company; a Nashville based sales crew company, which now supports the bill.
