John Mulvihill, the 56-year-old man charged with breaking and entering an 1100 Mound Street residence March 28, was a lab technician in UW-Madison's zoology department and allegedly had visited websites depicting sexual fantasies involving drugging female victims, according to Madison Police Department prosecutors.
According to an updated MPD release, the 21-year-old female victim reported waking up to see Mulvihill standing over her with a knife and a chemical taste in her mouth.
""There was a unique chemical odor in the room that was not present prior to the victim falling asleep,"" the release said.
According to an Associated Press report, investigators now believe the chemical was chloroform or ether.
Dane County District Attorney Mike Verveer told WMTV Madison that Mulvihill worked for the zoology department for 20 years and had access to a variety of chemicals, including chloroform and ether, indicating Mulvihill may have stolen the chemicals.
Mulvihill was charged with burglary, first and second-degree reckless endangerment and resisting police. According to the MPD release, a unit located Mulvihill, when he tried to charge police with his knife.
He was booked into Dane County Jail and bail was set at $40,000. Mulvihill appeared at his preliminary court hearing April 4.
