The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine will conduct a clinical study looking at whether a patient's own stem cells can be used to treat severe coronary artery disease, said a statement released Monday. The test is already going on at UW Hospital and Clinics, one of only 15-20 sites in the country to be participating in the study.
The study randomly chooses who receives the stem cell treatments and who receives a placebo, in order to see how effective the actual treatments are.
Researchers hope the treatment will result in the growth of new arteries to the heart or in enlargement of existing pathways. The study comes at a time when heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.
