13-year-old escapes attempted kidnapping near Beltline Monday

A 13-year-old Madison girl was the victim of an attempted kidnapping Monday morning, according to police.

Madison police said at about 7 a.m. Monday, a young girl was walking toward a bus-transfer point by her home near Magnolia Lane—a few blocks from the South Park Street on-ramp to the Beltline—when a man confronted her and grabbed her backpack.

The victim escaped from the suspect and took off at a sprint, authorities said. Still, according to police, the suspect—a Hispanic male in his 30s—followed the victim in a mid-sized green SUV.

Police said the girl realized she was being followed and ran to a nearby McDonalds. The SUV passed and the girl was able to get to school, where she notified the police of the incident.

No arrests had been made as of press time.
