The UW System's recently approved policy that would take extra factors like race, legacy and extracurriculars into consideration for admissions is under heavy state legislative scrutiny.
State Rep. Steve Nass, R-Whitewater, and state Sen. Glenn Grothman, R-West Bend, announced Wednesday that 19 state legislators, including themselves, desire Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen's opinion on the recently passed UW System holistic admissions policy.
Nass and Grothman sent a letter to Van Hollen Wednesday with 19 individual legislator's signatures, declaring the policy unlawful under Wisconsin State Statute 36.11, section 3, point A, which states: ""The board shall establish the policies for admission within the system and within these policies each institution shall establish specific requirements for admission to its courses of instruction. No sectarian or partisan tests or any tests based upon race, religion, national origin of U.S. citizens or sex shall ever be allowed in the admission of students thereto.""
The UW System Board of Regents passed the policy at its Feb. 8-9 meeting. UW-Madison has had a similar admissions policy enforced for 32 years.
