Gov. Jim Doyle successfully underwent surgery Wednesday at University Hospital to repair his left hip and will be on crutches for six to eight weeks.
""Following the surgery, the governor was awake, alert and comfortable in the recovery room,"" said Richard Illgen, the doctor who performed the operation, in a UW Health statement.
Doyle underwent hip resurfacing because ""he's been having trouble with his left hip lately,"" said Carla Vigue, Doyle's spokesperson.
Vigue said Doyle likes to play basketball, work out and walk, and underwent surgery so he can continue with those activites.
Illgen said he expects a full recovery. Doyle plans to rest for a few days in the hospital, follow up with physical therapy, and then get back to the office, according to Vigue.
