The UW System could receive extra money if the state Legislature supports a plan Gov. Jim Doyle is expected to introduce at his 2007 State of the State address.
The governor said he would ask for an additional $225 million for the University of Wisconsin College System, in an interview with The Associated Press.
This announcement follows two other major economic plans released last week: Doyle said he wants to increase the cigarette tax by $1.25 per pack and grant $30 million to boost the use of electronic medical records.
While referring to the additional money to boost the use of electronic records, Republican Senate leader Scott Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, dubbed Doyle's proposals ""the latest segregated fund raid.""
""We're less than a month into the new legislative session, and the governor has already announced his first raid on segregated funds to pay for new programs,"" Fitzgerald said in a statement.
