The university announced plans to earmark an additional $500,000 annually for UW-Madison arts and humanities programs Thursday.
""The Arts and Humanities Initiative will strengthen our already rich menu of offerings and provide a foundation for future excellence,"" UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley said in a university statement. ""It's a way to underscore our continuing commitment to arts and humanities education and to our students.""
According to the statement, he money will come from university funds set aside for reinvestment. Additionally, it is the first phase in a series intended to bolster the university's humanities program, the statement said.
The university additionally proposed a $1.3 million endowment to fund a center for arts and humanities based in the fifth floor of Memorial Library.
The funding announcement coincides with a long-term plan to demolish the Humanities building and build a new, updated center for arts and humanities.
Humanities will likely be torn down in two phases.
