The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team shut down Minnesota State this weekend in Mankato, posting wins of 3-1 and 6-1 in a two-game sweep.
Sophomore Angie Keseley, who awoke from her sophomore slump last week by scoring five points against North Dakota, continued her revived season against the Mavericks, garnering two more goals.
Nationwide goal leader junior Jinelle Zaugg added two more goals to her total which now stands at 14 on the season.
In the first game, the Badgers and the Mavericks entered the second period tied at one. Freshman Kyla Sanders gave Wisconsin the lead for good, taking a Sara Bauer feed and putting the puck past Minnesota State goalie Britni Kehler for the 2-1 lead.
Senior defender Meaghan Mikkelson later intercepted a pass and made it a two-goal game, minimizing the Minnesota State's hopes of coming back.
Saturday, Wisconsin's already potent offense came to life again, doubling its goal total from the previous game in a 6-1 blowout.
Zaugg opened the scoring early in the first period, taking a Bauer-won faceoff and utilizing Kehler's five hole to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead.
Mikkelson, who almost seems to have forgotten she was moved from offense to defense last year, put Wisconsin up 2-1 on a power play goal. A little over a minute later, senior assistant captain Phoebe Monteleone bought some insurance for the Badgers, scoring after a battle for a loose puck in front of the net.
It was 3-1 in the third period until the Badgers once again hit the offense button, getting power play goals from Zaugg, Sanders and Keseley within three minutes of each other.
Vetter had 50 saves over the two nights, contrary to last weekend when she had just seven saves (a shutout) in the one game she played against North Dakota. She is now 7-0-1 on the season, and 18-1-1 over her two year career, including postseason games. This was Vetter's first series sweep of the season, and the second time she has played in both games of a series.
The Badgers are off this coming weekend. Zaugg, sophomore Erika Lawler and head coach Mark Johnson will be in Ontario representing the United States in the Four Nations Cup. Captain Bobbi-Jo Slusar, as well as undergraduate assistant and former captain Carla Macleod, will compete for Canada.
