There may not be a big BCS controversy (yet) this season, but this year of college football has been one of the best in recent history. Brawls, comebacks, terrible seasons for Miami and Florida State, you name it, this season has had more interesting storylines than most. Many of the stories have yet to be finished.
The race for No. 1
Who else wants to start a petition to make sure the Wisconsin-Buffalo game is not at the same time as the Ohio State-Michigan game? This game is sure to be an instant classic, and if it's close, there's no reason why this game should not be replayed for the national championship. Tonight's game of the other two major unbeatens should be a great one too, as No. 3 West Virginia takes on No. 5 Louisville to see who could be another candidate for the national title game.
The Heisman battle
Thankfully, they haven't given out the Heisman before the season began, unlike the Reggie Bush debacle. Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith is the obvious frontrunner, with 22 touchdowns and only two interceptions while leading Ohio State to nine straight easy wins. Brady Quinn keeps pulling rabbits out of hats to somehow keep his team winning even though his stats aren't overwhelming. But the more intriguing picks are from the lesser-known schools.
Northern Illinois' Garrett Wolfe was putting together a great campaign through his first six games, averaging almost 224 yards, but Heisman voters may be put off by his combined 136 yards against powerhouses Western Michigan, Temple and Iowa. And while Hawaii's Colt Brennan may be from a weak conference, he's on pace for 4768 yards, a completion percentage of 74 and 54 touchdowns.
The most bipolar team on the planet
While painful to watch at times, the sideshow over at Michigan State has kept East Lansing at the edge of its seat (and their hands at John L. Smith's throat). A huge upset over Notre Dame was thwarted by their own incompetence. They were down 38-3 to Northwestern before staging the largest comeback in Division 1-A history to win 41-38. And instead of using that as motivation to turn their season around, they travel to Indiana and fall behind 46-7 before scoring two garbage touchdowns. Get this team some lithium, and fast.
The Miami-FIU brawl
Once again Miami showed its lack of class, not only in getting into yet another brawl, but suspending only one player for more than a game. The best part of the brawl was the commentary, though, as the now-fired Lamar Thomas had this to say during the fight: ""Now that's what I'm talking about, you come into our house, you should get your behind kicked ... I was about to go down there, I was about to get in that thing ... I say why don't they just meet outside in the tunnel after the ballgame and get it on some more."" Pure genius.
The Badgers
I'll be the first to admit I had low expectations for this season. But P.J. Hill came out of nowhere and turned this year into a fantastic one for the Badger faithful. Visions of the Michigan State game from two seasons ago were put to rest (at least for a week) after a great second-half performance by John Stocco helped prevent an Illinois upset. Even the possibility for an amazing bowl game I won't mention to prevent a jinx is still there, something nobody could have seen coming heading into this year. Kudos to Bret Bielema in keeping Barry's legacy alive and well.
Now the OSU-Michigan game could be a blowout, Louisville could end up in the national championship and Wisconsin could lose to Buffalo, making this season a complete wash. But thus far, it's been nothing short of fantastic.
