Taking the next step in the UW-Madison Campus Master Plan, the Chazen Museum of Art held its campaign kick-off Friday evening for its forthcoming expansion.
The Chazen, 800 University Ave., will take over the space currently occupied by the Alfred Walter Peterson Building, 750 University Ave.
This expansion is the latest in a series of construction projects aimed toward creating the East Campus Mall, which plans to create a seven-block, pedestrian-friendly ""esplanade"" lined with campus buildings by the year 2009.
This pedestrian mall was proposed originally in the campus' 1908 master plan, according to the Campus Master Plan website. The ""series of pedestrian plazas"" would open a path reaching from north of Regent Street to Lake Mendota, and after Ogg Hall is torn down in Fall 2007, a pedestrian standing on Murray Street will be able to see from Regent Street all the way north to Library Mall.
As construction continues on the Student Activity Center where University Square used to stand on the 700 block of University Avenue and Memorial Union renovations progress, the pedestrian mall will gradually take shape.
The Campus Master Plan is being headed by the Baltimore-based architectural firm, Ayers Saint Gross.
