Cory Lidle, a pitcher for the New York Yankees, died Wednesday when the plane he was piloting crashed into a 50-story condominium tower in Manhattan. The other passenger onboard was also killed.
The plane took off at around 2:30 p.m. from New Jersey and crashed into the condo at approximately 2:45. Authorities are still uncertain as to the cause of the crash.
Lidle became a Yankee on July 31 when he was a part of the trade involving Bobby Abreu. For New York, he was 4-3 with a 5.16 ERA in 10 games after being traded. His last game was game four of the Division Series against the Tigers in which he pitched one and one-third innings and gave up three runs.
A journeyman for most of his career, Lidle made headlines in 1995 when he acted as a replacement player with the Major Leagues on strike. His career numbers include a 82-72 record with two saves and a 4.57 ERA.
Lidle leaves behind a wife and one child at the age of 34.
