The Wisconsin women's soccer team continued its late-season slump this weekend, losing 3-0 at No. 9 Penn State Friday and 1-0 at UW-Milwaukee Sunday.
With the losses, Wisconsin (3-5-1 Big Ten, 6-8-3 overall), which has been shut out in four consecutive matches, dropped below .500 for the first time this season. With just one game remaining, the Badgers are assured of finishing with a losing record.
Against Penn State (8-1-1, 12-3-3), the Badgers kept the Nittany Lions off the scoreboard well into the second half, but eventually broke the game wide open.
Penn State scored their first goal in the 67th minute and followed with two more goals in the next eight minutes. Forward Aubrey Aden-Buie, midfielder Allie Long and defender Ali Krieger were credited with the Penn State goals.
The Badgers mustered just six shots in the game, three of which came from senior midfielder Allison Preiss. Junior goaltender Lynn Murray made three saves for the Badgers.
""We played a superb first half and another great 20 minutes in the second half,"" UW head coach Dean Duerst said. ""But against Penn State, you just cannot make one mistake.""
Sunday, the Badgers lost to UW-Milwaukee for just the second time ever, although the Panthers (15-2-1) are enjoying an outstanding season. With the win over Wisconsin, they extended their winning streak to 10 games and unbeaten streak to 12 games.
UWM sophomore midfielder Sarah Teegarden scored the game's only goal in the 51st minute on a corner kick. The Panthers held a slight 7-6 advantage in corner kicks on the day, as well as a 12-11 advantage in shots.
Senior midfielder Kara Kabellis led the Badgers with three shots while Preiss added two of her own. Erin Kane made four saves for the Panthers.
