Gubernatorial candidate and U.S. Rep. Mark Green, R-Green Bay, unveiled a proposal to prevent illegal immigration and provide incentives for legal citizens to settle in Wisconsin.
""I want to give incentives to people who follow our laws, not break them,"" Green said in a statement.
Green also accused Gov. Jim Doyle of having ""actually encouraged illegal immigration in Wisconsin"" and ""costing taxpayers $175 million dollars a year.""
According to Green, Doyle has provided state privileges such as in-state tuition and ""home loans to illegal immigrants"" paid with taxpayer money.
Green said he blames Doyle for Wisconsin's expanding illegal immigration problem, but Doyle's spokesperson Anne Lupardus said in a statement that Doyle has employed National Guard troops to ""beef up control in border states.""
Lupardus also said the claims of Doyle giving illegal immigrants state assistance is not true because aliens are not eligible to receive such benefits.
Though Green's reform would ""remove incentives"" for illegal immigrants to remain in the state, he said his plan would reward legal residents, by giving tax credits to help with English lessons.
