Fair Wisconsin ad campaign targets straight audience

Fair Wisconsin, a group campaigning against the civil unions and marriage ban up for vote on Nov. 7, released a new ad and report Thursday, highlighting its campaign's focus to bring straight people to the polls.

The ad features cattle farmer Arlyn from McFarland, Wis., saying he does not believe in same sex marriage, but believes the amendment reaches too far and takes away health care benefits and pensions.

""I believe in marriage between a man and a woman. I don't believe in gay marriage. That's how I was raised; but I am not here to judge somebody else,"" Arlyn said while riding his tractor. ""They are not hurting me, why should we hurt them? I'm voting no.""

This ad was released the same time Fair Wisconsin released a report detailing their strategy to win the Nov. 7 vote and how it differs from the failed attempts of similar organizations where gay marriage bans have passed.

According to Fair Wisconsin, other states have told voters the amendment would only affect gay couples, however the group has made their focus shift to unmarried straight couples and other issues such as health and insurance.

""If history is any guide, our opponents in Wisconsin will continue to deny that this is about benefits or legal protections,"" said Fair Wisconsin Campaign Manager Mike Tate in a statement.
