Gov. Jim Doyle vowed he would make tuition tax-deductible if he survived the hotly contested race for his position Wednesday.
In a press release, Doyle announced his plans to expand tax deductions to cover the full cost of tuition at any UW System school. Additionally, Doyle said the deductions would cover the costs of books and fees in addition to tuition.
In a retaliatory press release, U.S. Rep. Mark Green, R-Green Bay, characterized Doyle's plan as a ""desperate last minute campaign proposal"" and said Doyle gives tuition breaks to illegal immigrants.
In recent years, budget cuts approved by a largely Republican state Legislature have paralleled a steady increase in tuition for all students. At the same time, Republican leaders have insisted the UW System gets enough money but misappropriates its funds.
