Both gubernatorial candidates, incumbent Gov. Jim Doyle and Republican Mark Green, have spent and raised nearly the same amount of money in the last pre-election period, according to their respective campaign finance reports due Monday.
Green raised $1.85 million, Doyle topping him slightly with $2 million between Aug. 29 and Oct. 23.
Though the candidates spent nearly $2 million and spent about $4 million, Green campaign spokesperson Luke Punzenberger claimed in a statement that Doyle's contributions came from out of state interests.
""Jim Doyle may have the special interest groups and the Madison liberal elite on his side,"" Green said in a statement. ""But I have the farmers, factory workers, foresters, fishermen and working families that make up the fabric of Wisconsin on my side. I'll take their support over the special interests any day of the week.
While Green, has a total of $1,361,198 left in his campaign war chest, he has placed $467,844 in a separate account. The state Election Board ordered him to return this amount of money because the money came from out- of- state political action committees. Green is challenging this decision in the State Supreme Court. The court has not decided whether they will hear the case.
