UW Law School constitutional and foreign relations scholar Gordon Brewster Baldwin died in his sleep after attending an opera in Italy Monday. He was 77.
Baldwin began teaching international law at the university in 1957 while simultaneously serving as an Army lawyer for the Pentagon.
Baldwin made state history in 1983 when he successfully argued in Welsh v. Wisconsin that police violated the Fourth Amendment when they entered a Wisconsin home to arrest a man who had committed a traffic violation.
He also lectured at a number of foreign countries including Japan, Germany, Russia, Thailand, Iran and Cyprus.
Baldwin served at the state level in a number of capacities as well. Most recently, he was appointed to the State Ethics Board in 2000.
